Cabbage Rolls with Bacon
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Remove the core of the cabbage and place the head in the boiling water.
- As the leaves soften, gently peel them off with tongs, one by one, and set them aside to cool. You’ll need 10–12 large leaves.
- Trim the thick vein at the base of each leaf for easier rolling.
Step 2: Make the Filling
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well incorporated.
Step 3: Assemble the Rolls
- Lay a cabbage leaf flat and place about 2–3 tablespoons of the filling at the base of the leaf.
- Fold the sides over the filling, then roll it up tightly like a burrito. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
Step 4: Prepare the Sauce
- In a saucepan, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, thyme, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Step 5: Bake the Rolls
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
- Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls, ensuring they are fully coated.
- Scatter the bacon pieces over the top.
Step 6: Bake and Serve
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes, until the bacon is crispy and the sauce is bubbling.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
Conclusion
Cabbage Rolls with Bacon are a delicious way to elevate a traditional dish with smoky, savory flavors. The combination of tender cabbage, rich filling, and crispy bacon makes this recipe a standout. Serve them with a side of crusty bread or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal.
