Chocolate Flan Cake
Ingredients
Ingredients for the Cake:
1 18.25 ounce package chocolate cake mix
Ingredients listed on the cake mix package (eggs, oil, water) as required
Ingredients for the Flan:
1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 12 fluid ounce can evaporated milk
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ingredients for the Caramel:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
Chocolate Flan Cake
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water for the caramel. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture turns golden brown, about 10-12 minutes. Pour the caramel into the bottom of a 10-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden.
In a mixing bowl, prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the package instructions. Pour the batter over the cooled caramel layer in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
In another mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined. Carefully pour the flan mixture over the chocolate cake batter in the cake pan.
Place the cake pan into a larger baking dish or roasting pan. Pour hot water into the larger dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cake pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the cake is set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove the cake pan from the water bath and allow it to cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the cake pan to loosen the cake. Place a serving platter over the top of the pan and carefully invert the cake onto the platter. The caramel will drizzle down the sides of the cake.
Slice and serve chilled.
