Instructions:

  1. Prepare the steak:
    • Pat the steaks dry with a paper towel and season generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. Cook the onions:
    • Heat 2 tbsp of butter and 1 tbsp of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, or until caramelized and golden. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness of the onions.
    • Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sear the steak:
    • In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the remaining 1 tbsp of butter.
    • Place the steaks in the skillet and sear for 3-5 minutes on each side, depending on your desired level of doneness (use a meat thermometer for precision: 130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for medium).
    • If using beef broth or wine, deglaze the skillet by adding it after searing the steaks. Scrape up the flavorful bits from the bottom of the pan.
  4. Combine and serve:
    • Return the caramelized onions to the skillet, spooning them over and around the steaks. Let everything cook together for 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors.
    • Remove the skillet from heat, garnish with fresh parsley or thyme, and serve immediately.

Conclusion:
Classic Steak and Onions is a celebration of simplicity and bold flavors. With perfectly seared steak and richly caramelized onions, this dish is as comforting as it is impressive. Pair it with roasted potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a fresh salad for a meal that never fails to satisfy.
